Get the Spa Experience at Home: Turn Your Bathroom into a Hammam

Hamams, also known as Turkish baths, have a rich history that dates back to the Ottoman Empire. Originating in the Middle East, these steam baths were designed as a place for people to cleanse and purify their bodies. The concept of hammams spread throughout the Ottoman Empire and into Europe, becoming a popular form of relaxation and social gathering.

The warm, moist air in the hammam would help to cleanse the skin and open the pores, allowing for deep cleansing of the body.

In addition to the physical benefits, hammams can also provide a great deal of relaxation and stress relief. Taking a few minutes to unwind in your own personal hammam can help you to de-stress and rejuvenate, leaving you feeling refreshed and invigorated.

In today's world, many people are looking for ways to bring the luxurious and relaxing experience of the hammam into their own homes. With a few simple modifications, it is possible to turn your bathroom into a real hammam and enjoy the benefits of this ancient tradition.

Step 1 - The Requirement

The first step in creating your own hammam is to create a warm, humid environment.

You can do this by installing a steam generator in your bathroom.

A steam room instantly transforms your bathroom into a tranquil, spa-like space.

Steam showers may help relieve symptoms of arthritis and help reduce pain. It loosens stiff muscles, reduces soreness, and helps break down lactic acid in the muscles.

A 15-minute steam shower consumes just two gallons of water—compared to 40 for a conventional bath.

Step 2 - The Interior

The second step is the interior. You can start by installing a heated marble slab or using a heated towel rack to create a similar effect. Soft, warm lighting is essential for creating a relaxing atmosphere. You can either install dimmer switches or use candles or lanterns to create a cozy ambiance.

Another option is to look at the traditional hammams, where they use small glazed skylights known as "oculi" or "eyelets". Eyelets typically made of translucent materials filter natural light.

It creates a shimmering, almost magical atmosphere as light passes through the eyelets.

With the use of colored glass, the hammam is infused with a warm and welcoming glow.

In modern hammams, artificial lightings such as recessed ceiling lights or wall sconces can also create soft, diffused light. However, traditional eyelets are still used in many hammams to create a distinctive reflecting effect.

Hammam lighting must be able to withstand 60°C, saturated humidity, and operate on 12V or 24V.

Hammams typically have a central platform or bench where you can sit or lie down while enjoying the steam. You can install a built-in bench or add a few stools or chairs to create a comfortable seating area.

To complete the look of your hammam, consider adding some accessories like a traditional copper bowl and ladle for pouring water.

Step 3 - The Essentials

Once you have created the right environment, it is time to add the elements of a traditional hammam.

One thing that cannot be missed is a clay called Rhassoul.

Rhassoul is a natural mineral-rich clay that is composed of silica, magnesium, potassium, calcium, and other trace minerals.

It is often used in beauty products like soaps, masks, and shampoos due to its ability to absorb impurities, toxins, and excess oils from the skin and hair.

You may also want to add some traditional elements, such as Peshtemals towels and soap,

to help create the authentic hammam experience.

Another important part of the hammam experience is the use of traditional scrubbing tools, such as a kese or exfoliating mitt. These tools are designed to help remove dead skin cells and promote circulation, leaving your skin feeling refreshed and revitalized.

After you've enjoyed your home-hammam, your body needs to rest and recover.
